Fort Beaufort lies in the Kat River Valley, surrounded by the spectacular Katberg Mountains. It was established as a military outpost in 1823. It was named after the Duke of Beaufort, father of Lord Charles Somerset, governor of the Cape. Fort Beaufort is in the centre of a large citrus-producing area, which extends along the river for approximately 80 km to the north and south of the town.

HISTORICAL VIEW

Fort Beaufort Historical Museum

Established in 1939, rich in pictures, furniture and documents representing the history of the town and district. Relics of frontier life are exhibited in the building which was formerly the officers mess. National Monument.

Martello Tower

National Monument built in 1847 (one of only two such towers in South Africa).

Displays relics of clashes between Xhosas and Settlers

NATURE

Fort Foryce Nature Reserve

Overlooking the Hogsback mountains, the reserve offers picnic sites and various hiking trails, including a two day (25 km) trail with overnight hut. Game species include zebra, wildebeest and hartebeest
